‘DIALOGUE’ ON REGULATING THE SOCIAL MEDIA SPACE
The CEO of Elbativeni Impressions and Consult, Ms. Destiny Obiakoeze was on the Television programme “Dialogue” on Liberty TV in Abuja-Nigeria’s capital on November 3, 2019, to lend voice to issues on regulating the social media space alongside the Coordinator of the Young Journalist’s Forum Mr Chukwuma Nzeh.
Nigeria’s federal government insists it is revisiting moves to regulate social media saying it is working on how to inject sanity into the social media space. According to the Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed, social media is totally out of control today and at present constitutes a real danger to the unity of the country as reported in Daily trust. He cited various perspectives by stakeholders in the midst of the raging debate over fake news and misinformation through social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and others.
According to Destiny, while recent efforts and actions towards more regulations are not out of place, freedom of expression and objective criticism must be upheld for democracy to thrive otherwise no one will feel accountable.
“It is a question of balance. We need to see more stakeholder conversations with positive outcomes that does not alienate the people.
“Democratic processes, technological advancements, economic developements and general improvements to life happen with access to resource and information amongst others. We cannot take this away from social media which encourages sharing and a level playing field for learning.
Companies rely on social media as tools to position for growth.
